Tank Replacement

Some tanks can be repaired. Others have reached the end of their working life and need to come out of the ground.

When a tank needs replacing

A concrete septic tank in Mississippi is typically rated for 25 to 40 years, depending on the mix, the groundwater chemistry, and how well it was maintained. When the walls start to spall and the seams open enough that groundwater pours in during a wet season, sealing stops being a permanent fix and the tank needs to be replaced entirely.

The process starts with pumping the old tank empty and disconnecting the inlet and outlet lines. The old tank is then excavated and removed. In some cases the old tank is crushed in place and backfilled, but removing it entirely is the cleaner approach because it lets the crew inspect the bedding and correct any grade issues that may have contributed to the failure.

The new tank is lowered into the prepared excavation, leveled, connected to the existing inlet and outlet piping, and backfilled. The crew checks the grade on both the inlet pipe (which needs a consistent fall from the house) and the outlet (which needs to deliver effluent to the distribution box at the correct elevation). A tank that settles unevenly after backfill can redirect flow away from the outlet baffle and toward a seam, which is a problem that shows up months later and is expensive to fix.

Lacey's Digging Services has been replacing tanks across Flowood and Rankin County for over three decades. The team has the equipment and the local soil knowledge to get the new system bedded and graded right the first time.
